Couple enjoying vacation thanks to buying new hearing aids to treat their hearing loss.

You make an investment when you buy hearing aids, so take measures to keep them safe as you hit the road. Vacations should be stress-free, but that’s not always the case. If you come up with a plan to care for and protect your hearing aids properly, that’s one less thing to stress about when you travel. When vacationing, are there any special measures to put in place for the protection of your hearing aids?

Start With the Basics

First, you will want to pack a cleaning kit. When traveling you still need to do all of the things you do while at home to clean your hearing aids. A brush or pick is included with the majority of quality brand cleaning kits. It’s a prudent idea to bring a carrying case for storage and a soft wiping cloth.

It’s a prudent strategy to bring extra batteries, as well. Chances are you’ll be using the hearing aids longer than normal, so it’s good to have a backup. If your hearing aids have rechargeable batteries, bring along an extra charger, as well. Your additional charger needs to be carried somewhere separate just in case one gets lost.

Also, plan to bring these other things:

  • Tubing
  • Soft domes
  • Sport clip

Before loading up your car check twice to be sure you packed all the things you may need. You never know for sure exactly when you may need one of your hearing aid supplies, so pack them in an easy to access spot. Carry on luggage is the best spot to keep these things when you are flying on a plane.

Be Certain to Get Them Cleaned And Checked

Bring your hearing aids in for a cleaning and tune-up one week or two before you go on your trip. Properly working hearing aids will make your travels safer and much more enjoyable. Ask the retailer about any warranties you have on the devices and bring any paperwork with you in case something goes wrong. Learn how to file a claim otherwise you might miss something and you could void the warranty.

You should check into whether there are any hearing aid repair shops near where you are staying. If you require a new battery or maybe even some repairs, you will be able to bring it right in.

Wearing Hearing Aids at The Airport

Considering all the changing security criteria, going to the airport is often confusing. When you are walking through the security checkpoint, keep your hearing aids in your ear. Inform security that you have a hearing aid as you approach so that they know ahead of time. In most cases, you probably won’t need to remove them as you step through the metal detector, but follow the directions of the security officer.

You are also free to use your hearing aids on the airplane. You will not need to turn them off before take off like you have to with a mobile device, either. When on the plane, your hearing aid may not work as well. If you are having a hard time hearing, use visual clues to let people know. When you don’t understand what someone is saying, try cupping your ear to clue them in.

Consider Getting a Dryer or Dehumidifier

Vacations often go right along with water fun and humidity. Just because you’re not planning on going swimming, it doesn’t mean humidity is not still a potential problem. A dryer is a preventative measure worth having all year round, but it’s especially important when you’re traveling.

Make Sure You Know How Your Hearing Aids Function

Different features work best in different environments. In a crowded restaurant for example, or at an amusement park, you will need to filter out background noise. Hearing aids have outdoor settings that can make the beach more enjoyable. But you have to be familiar with how your hearing aid works if you want to take advantage of these features.

Bring Along a Remote Microphone

In loud environments, this will come in handy. When you are chatting with someone, clip the mic to them and you will be able to hear them better.

Notify the Hotel or Resort

Commonly, popular vacation destinations accommodate for the hearing impaired. Since you won’t be using your hearing aids during the night you will want to take advantage of that. Ask them about rooms with smoke alarms that have flashing lights or shake the bed. Closed caption televisions and special phones can be requested.

Traveling is fun, but it can also be crazy, too. Get your hearing aids situated before you go, so you can relax and enjoy your trip. Schedule an appointment for a tune-up today.
